Dec 04, 2017 · It is a valid point though. The surface grinder I have set up and in use is a 55 year old doall, and it'll hold a tenth without really trying. We know these won't be as accurate, just as we know a surface grinder converted to belts won't be as accurate. The question is how much so.

I really want to get a surface grinder but have no space for one and can't justify the cost of a dedicated unit. currently I use my flat platen and vertical grinding to try and flatten my blades which gets them reasonably flat but not necessarily parallel.

Apr 18, 2013 · My rule of finger is that if the set-up can't be pushed off with one finger then it will hold for grinding on a hand or power feed surface grinder on a magnetic chuck. Certainly some skill and paying strict attention to the work and job is necessary when doing low hold jobs.

Apr 19, 2013 · Not just work holding but that plus the general quality grinding parts is the flatness of the chuck. I once saw a chuck with a .007 low at center near the bump rail. I do not understand why so many think all work should only be set at center and on the bump rail.
